Identical twin daughters were born May 12, 1975, in San Francisco, CA to John Edwin and Sondra Shumway Bennion. Christine Sarah Bennion was the second twin. Due to complications during labor and delivery, Christine was born with severe brain damage resulting in quadriplegia and cognitive abilities similar to those of an infant.
Joy and love always radiated from and around Christine. She taught all who knew her to love unconditionally, to serve cheerfully, and to patiently take life one day at a time. Although her verbal communication was non-existent, her infectious giggles dispersed the sadness of spilled milk at the dinner table, the tension of sibling arguments, and the apprehension of calculated mischief when we thought no one was looking. She loved her seven siblings and the chaos with which they would surround her. Her special bond with her parents, especially her mother, was tender. She loved family walks around the block and Balboa Island, having her hair brushed, bedtime snuggles, mashed potatoes, and chocolate pudding. Hearty giggles could often be heard from her while watching old movies with Doris Day, Dean Jones, Fred McMurray, Shirley Temple, and Hayley Mills. She especially loved the musicals Almost Angels, Singing in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Hello Dolly, and The Sound of Music.
Through her quiet example, Christine served an informal mission alongside her parents in the Georgia Atlanta North Mission for three years. She also served alongside them for the past 10 months at the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the young service missionary department. Christine has instilled in our family a deep love for God and strengthened our testimonies of Jesus Christ and our desires to be reunited one day.
Christine quietly returned to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on October 15, 2019. Christine, you are eternally tucked in the hearts of your parents, four sisters, three brothers, three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and 21 nieces and nephews. We love you beyond words and know that your reunion is sweet with your four grandparents, two aunts, one uncle, and one nephew.
We would like to extend our heartfelt love and gratitude to Nubia Chapa for years of tender loving care and friendship to Christine and our family. We love you, Nubia. We would also like to extend our thanks to Josie for her care for Christine this past year.
