ERDA – Michael Joseph Rocco (Mike), age 63, died on July 28, 2019 surrounded by loved ones after battling multiple health issues for over 3 years. Mike was born February 4, 1956 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph William and Gayle Ann Rocco.
Mike was raised in Magna, Utah where he resided until he moved to ERDA many years ago. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. His hunting paradise was at “The Ranch” in northern Utah where the Holmgren family let him park his trailer and hunt their land. Geese still tremble at the sound of his name even though his 10 gauge is now quiet.
Mike worked for Ames Construction as a Superintendent until he left them a few years ago due to his health issues. He loved working for Ames and the excitement of the construction jobs he managed. He was famous for saying that he knew where every pipe was buried on the Kennecott smelter property.
Mike has many many friends who have stayed in touch and close to him and by his side at the end. He was a gruff man with a great big heart and was generous to a fault. We could all see through that gruff exterior. He loved his family and would go toe to toe with anyone if they even slightly talked bad about them. He especially loved his son, Joey whom he took on great hunting and fishing trips too numerous to mention.
Our family wished to give special thanks to Darlene (Dar) and Tom Jore for all the time and effort they spent with Mike and for all the home cooked food and companionship they gave him on a daily basis throughout his health struggles. They are truly Angels.
We also want to thank Mike and Rita Coon for always visiting Mike and keeping their life-long friendship alive. Mike also had very kind neighbors who we appreciate for constantly checking in on him.
Mike is preceded in death by his father; Joseph, and his brother; Jeff. He is survived by his son; Joey, mother; Gayle, and brother; Mark (Shawn) as well as his nephew’s; Tony (Sherrianne) and Marc and niece; Kali Kay (Tim) . He adored his grand-nephew; Reid LaPrade.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Aug. 17, 2019 from 5 until 8 pm at The Copper Club golf course in Magna located at 8975 W 2600 S. There will be a cash bar and we will also be serving light refreshments.
This will be a very casual event and Mike would want everyone to be comfortable. Mike loved his hunting and outdoor clothes so feel free to wear your cammo attire or maybe your favorite Hawaiian shirt. Bring any photos or other memories that you might want to share.
